Spokane County Democrats

May 31, 2020

We, the Spokane County Democrats, stand in solidarity with the Spokane NAACP, and will do everything in our power to support its mission: to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights and to eliminate race-based discrimination of people in Spokane.

The following statement echoes the words of the Washington State Democratic Party Chair.

We recognize that racial bias in our policing and justice system is not new, and for every step forward it feels like three steps back – actions in Seattle and other cities this past weekend presented little evidence that repair and reparations are possible. However, today in Spokane, there was a peaceful demonstration that makes us proud and gives Spokane a ray of hope.

The work of the Spokane County Democrats is primarily electoral. Our mission is to elect Democrats who will represent us and carry our Spokane values into the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our local and state governments.

That being said, it is also our role to encourage Democrats in Spokane County to be part of the healing and change process. Candidates, elected leaders and community members need to listen, offer hope, start anew, and work to knit together a path for change.

We need leadership willing to make clear that not only do the actions of a few agitators have consequences, but that the actions of rogue police must have consequences too.

We need action that is more than just a promise of justice – it needs to be a reality. And we, the Spokane County Democrats, have faith in our efforts to elect good people who will lead the way to make that so.
