PEACE AND JUSTICE ACTION LEAGUE OF SPOKANE PRESENTS COMMUNITY ORGANIZING: BUILDING THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE

Organizing is how everyday people accomplish extraordinary things—how everyday people can make their own decisions, take action together for shared goals, build their collective power, and change the balance of power. It’s the power of democracy in action. These are skills of Gandhi, King, Chavez, and many others who put their beliefs into action and changed history.

In this interactive workshop series with PJALS Director Liz Moore, we’ll explore and practice using the theories and methodologies of great organizers. Come join us!

  • What is "organizing," and what are most important tasks of an organizer?
  • How can you structure a conversation to move someone to action?
  • What are the steps of a campaign for change?
  • How can your tactics increase pressure on a decision-maker?
  • What makes a good organizing issue?
  • What are the key steps to mobilize people to follow through?

Workshop leader Liz Moore is the Director of the Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane. She has over twenty years of experience organizing for social justice, beginning in PJALS' youth group as a high school student. Liz brings experience from coalition-building and racial justice organizing with the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, popular education and grassroots leadership development with the National Union of Healthcare Workers, community-based initiative campaigns, and a depth of community organizing on a broad array of issues including marriage equality and environmental justice.

Her experience has shown that effective organizing always comes down to the same core work: joining with people with common issues or shared values, providing training and practice to build skills and deepen analysis, planning a strategic series of actions, and together acting to create change.
